Rome, Italy

Rome is probably my favorite city in the world! There are so many amazing things to see and it is all scattered throughout the city.

The colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill

No Rome trip would be complete without a visit to the iconic Colosseum. You will need to arrange a self guided tour time. Be aware of the actors outside in full Roman garb. However, if you take a picture of them or with them, they will expect payment.

Also, while you are in the area, make sure to visit the nearby arches of Constantine and Titus, Palatine Hill and the Roman Forum. Additionally, to the north is the monument to Victor Emmanuel II.

Trevi Fountain, The Pantheon, Piazza Navona, The Spanish Steps and Giolitti

The Trevi Fountain is a famous landmark of Rome. Additionally, many tourists go to through a coin backwards of their shoulder for good luck.

Within walking distance of the fountain is also the Piazza Navona and the Pantheon. Also, the latter building is a marvel of architecture for its time, with a massive dome and oculus (or opening) in the ceiling.

The Spanish Steps are located just to the north. It is a fun place to visit at night with a happening atmosphere and street vendors. Perched at the top of the steps is the Trinità dei Monti church.

Additionally, nearby is Giollitti, which is the most famous gelateria  in Rome. There will be a crazy mob surrounding the counter and there is not an organized line. If you don’t know your order by the time you get to the front of the line, be prepared for some dirty looks from the other patrons.

Vatican City, Vatican Museum and St Peters Basilica

Vatican City is the smallest country in the world! However, there is a lot to do here and you should plan to spend an entire day. You can and should book your tickets in advance via the Vatican Museum website.

Also, on the Vatican Museum tour, we were able to see Michelangelo’s famous Sistine Chapel (pictures not permitted). At the end of the tour you finish beside St Peter’s Basilica, which houses Michelangelo’s Pietà sculpture.

Additionally, for an unique tour experience, you can try to get tickets for the Necropolis tour. The tour includes the Vatican crypts and has a limited number of visitors per day. Information regarding prices and reservations can be found on the Vatican Excavations office website.

ALSO CONSIDER VISITING THESE NEARBY AREAS

On the west side of Rome, just over the Tiber River, is Trastavere. There are numerous small restaurants and it is a great place to grab dinner during your visit.

Be sure to consider some nearby areas such as Florence and Tuscany or Sorento and the Amalfi Coast.
