Costa Rica 2 Week Itinerary

Day 1 – Arenal: Drive to Hotel Nayara

This was our honeymoon trip, so I might be a bit biased. However we had an amazing trip! Additionally, on our first day, we flew into San Jose and rented a jeep.

Afterwards, we drove north to Arenal to stay at Hotel Nayara, which is now Nayara Gardens. It was a beautiful property and a great start to our vacation.

Day 2 – Arenal: Volcano and Hot Springs

Our first day was a relaxing day. We had lunch in La Fortuna in town. Also, it seems to be common, but you couldn’t see the top of Arenal Volcano as it was covered with clouds.

In the evening, we attended a dinner and hot springs evening, schedule by our hotel at the Ecotermales Hot Springs.

Day 3 – Monteverde: Ziplining and Coffee Tour

After leaving Arenal, we drove to Monteverde, which is a tropical rainforest with rolling hills and mountains. Additionally, we did the zipline canopy tour in the “cloud forest” with Selvatura.

Also, after ziplining, we took at coffee tour at Don Juan Coffee Farm.

Day 4 – Monteverde: Cloud Forest and Bird Watching Tour

In the morning, we took a  guided bird tour of the cloud forest. After leaving, we took the ferry to Nicoya peninsula and stay at Casa Mar Bella in Santa Teresa.

The Nicoya peninsula was beautiful. However, be aware that it is a little more time and work to get to with the ferry.

If I was tight on time, I’d probably skip this part since it is time consuming to get there and there are a lot of beach areas in Costa Rica. However, if you are looking a week to feel like you are getting away, then it might be worth the effort.

Day 5 – Nicoya: Santa Teresa and Waterfall Hike

During our first day on the Nicoya Peninsula, we went on a Montezuma waterfall hike. Afterwards, we spent some time relaxing at the hotel pool overlooking the ocean.

Day 6 – Nicoya: Beach Day and Montezuma

On our second day in Santa Teresa, we spent some time at the beach. Additionally, that evening we went to nearby Montezuma and had dinner in town.

Day 7 – Manuel Antonio: National Park

After 3 nights in Santa Teresa, we left and took the ferry across and drove to Manuel Antonio National Park. We only had a quick 2 hours at the park as we didn’t realize it was closed the next day. However, we saw a lot of animals including a sloth and monkeys during our short time. Additionally, we had dinner at El Avion. We spent the night at La Posada Jungle Hotel

Day 8 – Manuel Antonio: Atv and Waterfall Tour

In the morning we did an ATV and rainforest tour. It was fun to ride through rivers, swim and visit waterfalls. Also, after lunch we spent some time at the Manual Antonio beach.

Day 9 – Corcovado: Fly to Aguila de Osa

In the morning, we drove to San Jose and dropped off our rental car. Afterwards, we flew to Corcovado National Park on the Osa peninsula. Additionally, we stayed at the eco-resort, Aguila de Osa.

Aguila de Osa was really remote and you could hear the monkeys run across your cabin roof and look down at you from above!

Day 10 – Corcovado: Rainforest Tour

Aguila de Osa, included options in the price of the resort. On our first day, we went on a guided rainforest tour. We saw numerous species of monkeys, sleeping bats and giant spiders!

Additionally, Corcovado is known for the Baird’s Tapir, which is a boar-like animal only found in the Central American area. However, we never did see one.

Day 11 – Corcovado: Snorkeling and Bug Lady Tour

On our second day in Corcovado, we did a snorkeling and ocean tour. We saw dolphins, whales and numerous fish!

Also, that evening we went on the “Bug Lady” night tour. However, it was really fun and really interesting, even if you aren’t that into bugs. Additionally, we saw a trap door spider, a net-casting spider, a snake and a green tree frog, which is Costa Rica’s national animal.

Day 12 – Corcovado: Kayaking and Hiking

Our third day in Corcovado was a free day. Also, we went kayaking in along the inlets. Afterwards, we took a hike on one of the trails from the resort. Additionally, later in the evening, we had enjoyed a couples massage.

Day 13 – San Jose: Downtown

We flew back to San Jose and toured the city. Also, we felt pretty safe. However, it did seem that you had to be more aware of your surroundings compared to traveling around other parts of the country. Finally, we stayed in the historic, Hotel Grano de Oro and had a nice dinner at their restaurant.

Day 14 – Fly Home

On our final day, we flew home to Cincinnati, Ohio. Additionally, I hope that you have as much fun during your visit to Costa Rica as we did!
